Jean Alesi won the provisional pole position for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix in Monza , Italy, edging British favorite Damon Hill by 0.114 seconds in the opening round of qualifying.

Ted Musgrave broke his own track mark to earn the top starting spot for Saturday night’s Miller Genuine Draft 400 in Richmond, Va. Musgrave needed just 21.765 seconds to guide his Ford Thunderbird to a record-setting lap. His lap translated into a speed of 124.052 m.p.h., safely ahead of the 123.474 mark he set March 4.

The U.S. women’s water polo team lost to Italy, 14-9, in the bronze medal game of the world championships in Rome. Also, the U.S. men enhanced their chances for a sixth-place finish by tying Hungary, 11-11.
