*** Jim Lauderdale, “Pretty Close to the Truth,” Atlantic. The L.A.-based singer’s second album is intriguingly enigmatic, much more so than his instantly accessible ’91 solo debut. Lyrically, this one sides more with poetic folk probing than heart-on-sleeve country emotionalism. As he sings in the title tune: “I believe in the long, long trail of clues that after a while lead pretty close to the truth.” Accurately put.
