It took a week, but 20th-ranked Texas has found its defense.

After giving up 489 yards, including 251 to one running back, in a season-opening victory against Pittsburgh, the Longhorns figured out how to stop the run Saturday and defeated Louisville, 30-16, at Austin, Tex.

Texas, a once-powerful program that has struggled the past decade, is 2-0 for the first time since 1985.

“Last week, we came out nervous and tense and didn’t play up to our potential,” linebacker Kevin Watler said. “This week, we knew we had to come out and show what we were capable of.”

The defense produced three interceptions, one for a touchdown, and had four sacks against the Cardinals (0-2).

Tulane 15, Rice 13--Bart Baldwin kicked the last of his school-record five field goals, a 47-yarder, as time expired at Houston.

Baldwin, who missed four field-goal attempts against Southern Mississippi last week, broke the record of four field goals set by Dan Guirl against Louisville in 1986.

He missed a chance at a record fifth when he failed on a 45-yarder with 3:34 to play. But Tulane (1-1) gave him another chance, driving 42 yards in eight plays, spurred by a 12-yard, third-down pass from Craig Randell to Jerold Sowell.
