Frank Costa passed for a career-high 295 yards and four touchdowns Saturday night and fifth-ranked Miami feasted on first-half turnovers to run away from Arizona State, 47-10.

The teams had never met, but Miami had struck out in three previous trips to Sun Devil Stadium. The Hurricanes (2-0) lost in the 1985, 1987 and 1994 Fiesta Bowls, absorbing a stinging 29-0 defeat at the hands of Arizona last New Year’s Day.

That defeat raised questions whether the proud dynasty was in decline and prompted Coach Dennis Erickson to guarantee a victory over Arizona State. His Hurricanes wasted little time making good, taking advantage of three fumble recoveries and two interceptions to build a 33-10 halftime lead.

Costa completed nine passes in last week’s 56-0 victory over Georgia Southern, and the Hurricanes scored six touchdowns on the ground. Against a stronger opponent, Costa went to a modest passing game that featured short passes, which his receivers stretched into long scores.

Jammi German scored from 56 and 49 yards out on a play called the “middle screen,” a slant inside to the wide receiver about five yards downfield. German put Miami ahead, 6-3, with his first catch, turning outside to beat covering linebackers and cutting back inside to outrun the secondary.

His second touchdown made the score 40-10 with 8:41 to play in the third quarter, and Erickson pulled Costa.

Costa also completed touchdown passes of 10 yards to Chris T. Jones and 53 yards to tailback Jonathan Harris, who caught Arizona State in a blitz and raced to the end zone.

James Stewart scored on nine- and one-yard runs, and Danyell Ferguson made a three-yard touchdown run.
