Glendale Squeezes by Citrus

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Glendale College saved the game, and probably its sanity, when a two-point conversion attempt by Citrus failed, preserving a 28-26 victory for the Vaqueros Saturday at Citrus Stadium.

That was one of the few times the Citrus passing combination of Gabe Agredano and J.J. Johnson did not connect, following a 28-yard touchdown catch by Johnson that narrowed Glendale’s lead to two points with 2:38 to play.

On the conversion attempt, Glendale defensive back Erik Martin knocked the ball away from Johnson to prevent the tie.

Otherwise, Agredano and Johnson virtually had their way with the Vaquero defense.

Agredano completed 15 of 28 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns.

Johnson caught both of those touchdowns, including a 75-yarder late in the first quarter. He had 12 catches for 234 yards.

Citrus led, 20-14, before Glendale took the lead on a 22-yard pass from Eddie Michel to Tim Hilton to make it 21-20 seven seconds into the final quarter.

On the ensuing possession, Glendale linebacker Victor Huezo recovered a fumble off a high snap on a punt attempt, giving the Vaqueros the ball on the Citrus 30.

Five plays later, Jerry Sims, who led all rushers with 62 yards in 16 carries, ran eight yards to make it 28-20.

Glendale got on the board first after linebacker Neal Sowter recovered Ron Sanders’ fumble on the Citrus 29.

Brian O’Toole eventually scored on a three-yard run to make it 7-0 with 8 minutes 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

Citrus, however, didn’t need much time to even things up as Agredano’s 67-yard pass play to Sanders made it 7-7.

Johnson and Agredano hooked up on their 75-yarder to make it 14-7 with 2:27 left in the quarter.

Seconds later, a 40-yard pass play--from Jose Delgado to Tim Hilton--set up the tying score for Glendale, a nine-yard pass from Delgado to Hector Valencia.
