SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Look: Sheer legs and towering high heels. Here are three of the hottest and highest versions.

How to Do It Big, I: The shoe for fall is nothing new--the simple, stiletto-heeled pumps with extra pointy toes scream sex appeal. But this season, designers have decreed that they should be worn with fall’s ubiquitous little suit--even to the office. London shoe designer Manolo Blahnik’s version, from Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills, is real patent leather.

Total: $395.

How to Do It Budget, I: Frederick’s of Hollywood is the source for bargain stilettos. These super four-inch spikes come in black, red, white and bone leather or black patent leather.

Total: $29.

How to Do It Big, II: Direct from Paris, the clear vinyl, high-heel boot by Karl Lagerfeld has appeared in every fashion magazine this month. But just try to find them in the stores. Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills still has some left. The boot has side zippers, padded soles and tiny air holes at the instep.

Total: $395.

How to Do It Budget, II: The see-through, vinyl boot from Frederick’s of Hollywood comes with shiny white, yellow or black tips. Unlike the French version, it lacks ventilation.

Total: $89.

How to Do It Big, III: The hot high heel from Chanel. “We can’t keep them in stock,” says Victoria Kaye of I. Magnin, Beverly Hills. This four-inch-high pump with patent leather tips comes in black or white with black tips.

Total: $425.

How to Do It Budget, III: New York shoe designer Kenneth Cole’s ankle-strap pump is a lot clunkier than Chanel’s, but more practical for the average suit-wearing gal.

Total: $125.
