PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : McDaniel Stands Out Amid Disappointment

Share

After giving up 550 yards and seven touchdowns in two games, the Raiders’ pass defense ranks 22nd in the NFL and that does not sit well with Pro Bowl cornerback Terry McDaniel.

“We haven’t been playing good at all,” said McDaniel, whose 41-yard fumble return for a touchdown was overshadowed in the Raiders’ 38-9 loss to Seattle on Sunday. “We’re giving up too many points and too many big plays.”

Although the Raiders have had more than their share of problems stopping the pass, McDaniel has played well.

Against San Francisco, it was his deflection of a pass that turned into an interception by linebacker Greg Biekert, which led to the Raiders’ first touchdown.

McDaniel also played well against the Seahawks with several deflections and an interception that was nullified because of a penalty.

Quarterback Jeff Hostetler threw impressively in practice. “I have no question that his arm is fine,” Coach Art Shell said. “I’m very confident in that. He’s just been a little out of sync.”

Defensive tackle Jerry Ball, who suffered a pulled hamstring against Seattle, did not practice for the second consecutive day but is listed as probable for Sunday’s game at Denver. . . . Defensive tackle Willie Broughton, who suffered a dislocated right elbow in preseason drills, resumed limited practice this week. . . . Defensive lineman Scott Davis is still a no-show and Shell said he is not expected to return before Sunday.
