Troubled Daly Goes Out Again but Plans to Return Next Year
John Daly, who has not competed since he scuffled with a spectator three weeks ago, will take the rest of the year off because of “mental and physical” problems.
PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said Friday that Daly, who has left the tour twice before for personal problems, volunteered to take a break from competitive golf.
He will next play in the season-opening Mercedes Championship the first week in January, Finchem said.
Finchem also said that Daly’s “mental and physical” preparations to return next year will involve members of his staff. He declined to go into specifics of that preparation.
Daly, who has a stormy personal history, was suspended on two occasions by former commissioner Deane Beman, including once to undergo alcohol rehabilitation treatment.
In 18 tournaments this season, Daly missed the cut in seven, withdrew from one, was disqualified in another and won at Atlanta.
