EAST LOS ANGELES : Big Brothers Seek Latino Monitors

Share

Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles will begin its campaign Tuesday to increase the number of Latino men to mentor Latino boys, who make up a large percentage of the organization’s rolls locally.

The comedy troupe Culture Clash will unveil the Latino Outreach Campaign at a 11:30 a.m. luncheon at Tamayo’s Restaurant, 5300 E. Olympic Blvd.

The organization hopes to make more Latino matches because their common culture and language may help to increase the level of understanding and comfort between them, said spokeswoman Leslie Diaz. Latino boys make up one-third of the boys in need of adult mentoring; only 7% of the Big Brothers in Los Angeles are Latino, she said.

In March the Big Brothers opened an office at the East Los Angeles Skills Center, 3921 Selig Place, to increase the organization’s presence in the Latino community.
