Share

Kelly Ford has been hired to assist Cal State Northridge softball Coach Janet Sherman.

Ford, who played for Oklahoma in 1990 and ‘92, returns to the Matador program after a one-year absence. Ford was a graduate assistant in 1993 to former Coach Gary Torgeson. She was an assistant at Oklahoma last season.

“She knows how the program is run and she knows the expectations here,” Sherman said. “We also have the same goals and I know she is going to put out 100%.”

Antelope Valley High’s Caleb Smith did not suffer a broken right foot as originally thought after last week’s victory over West Bakersfield. However, the senior defensive lineman was unable to practice Monday, and his status for this weekend’s game against Bakersfield is uncertain, Antelope Valley Coach Brent Newcomb said.

Smith, who was an All-Golden League selection last year, may benefit from an extra day. The game has been moved to Saturday night at Bakersfield College to accommodate a bigger crowd.

St. Genevieve quarterback Randy Iaccino will be sidelined six to eight weeks because of a broken ankle suffered when he tried to make a cut during the first half of last week’s 24-0 loss to Paraclete.

Vince Pisano will replace Iaccino this week. The Valiants also will play without fullback Vinny Tannous (knee injury) this week.

Rene Goth, a freshman outside hitter at Cal State Northridge, might play in tonight’s match at Pepperdine after missing the Northern Arizona tournament Friday and Saturday because of an ankle injury suffered against Idaho.
