GARDEN GROVE : 1 Suspect in Slaying of Youth Surrenders

One of two men sought in the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old El Modena High School junior at a Trask Avenue mobile home park surrendered to police Thursday.

Keith E. Zavala, 19, walked into the police station at 1:30 p.m. with his attorney and was arrested on suspicion of murder, assault with a deadly weapon and auto theft.

Zavala, a resident of the Meadowlark Mobile Estates park where the stabbing took place Sept. 19, was booked into the Orange County Jail and held on $250,000 bail, police said.

Jose Luis Ramirez died at UCI Medical Center after being stabbed in the neck in a dispute involving three men and a woman. One of the men, Jose Rodriguez, 20, of Santa Ana was treated for stab wounds and released from the hospital.

After Ramirez and Rodriguez were stabbed, police said, Zavala and Miguel de Jesus Silva, a 23-year-old resident of the park, fled in Ramirez’s red 1981 Mustang, which was later found abandoned in Santa Ana. Police are still seeking Silva.
