THRILL OF VICTORY

As the final seconds ticked off the clock in Santiago’s 14-3 victory over Buena Park Thursday, Tom Sokanthong knelt and kissed the grass at Buena Park High.

Sokanthong, a senior running back, had been on the field for every one of Santiago’s 15 consecutive losses over the past three seasons.

“It felt incredible,” said Sokanthong, who led the Cavaliers with 60 yards rushing. “I went through every loss, but I knew with the new coach (Ben Haley), we’d improve. I love my team.”

NOTHING TO CHEER ABOUT

The Century High cheerleading squad rooted the Centurions to a 39-13 Friday victory at Ocean View, but they did it without the services of member Molly Guillian, who fell during a pregame stunt and was treated on the field by trainers while the coin flip was being conducted. According to Century trainer John Beaumont, Guillian suffered a broken arm and was treated at a local hospital.

BACK, BACK, BACK

Corona del Mar’s J.J. DiCesare broke Gordon Moss’ 12-year school record Thursday night (by 13 yards) with a 76-yard punt against Kennedy. A clipping penalty added another six yards. The result? DiCesare kicked from the Sea Kings’ 12 and Kennedy took over at its 12.

ON THE RECORD

“It’s tough to say, but you can’t count him out.”

--Allen Carter, Anaheim coach, after being asked if Reuben Droughns was the best running back in the county.

LOOKING AHEAD

“Seinfeld” will get a challenge Thursday night when third-ranked Irvine plays second-ranked Mater Dei at Santa Ana Stadium.

It’s the second time in three weeks the Monarchs have played a team ranked third; they beat Esperanza, 38-28, in Week 2.

Though the Vaqueros lost to Anaheim, 20-7, Friday, they are aiming for a county-record fourth consecutive Southern Section championship.

Another epic battle--and maybe historic if there’s an upset--takes place Thursday when Los Alamitos plays host to a skilled Pasadena Muir team. The Griffins have a 38-game unbeaten streak.

Another streak could come to an end, too, Thursday with an upset at Newport Harbor High. Ocean View--with a 32-game losing streak--squares off against host Estancia, which ended a nine-game skid last week.

CONCERNED CHARGERS

El Toro sophomore Merle Sango scored his third touchdown of the season Friday, but he would gladly give each back if his best friend, Tomas Mejia, could watch him play.

Mejia was one was one of four Charger cross-country runners who were seriously injured in an automobile accident Aug. 26. Mejia remains in a coma at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

“I think about him all the time,” Sango said. “I’m scoring all my touchdowns for him and praying that everything will turn out all right.”

Contributions to help the four families defray medical and rehabilitation costs can be made by calling El Toro High at (714) 586-6333.

THE MUNCHIES

Edison led, 14-7, with three minutes left, but San Clemente was driving. The public address announcer at San Clemente reminded fans that, “There are half-price chicken burgers and hot dogs left.”

On the sideline, Edison wide receiver Tom Bertron turned to lineman Tyler Lehto and said, “You hear that? Half-price burgers. You want to go get one?”

Edison won, 14-7, but Bertron went hungry.
