Robert Baldwin rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as Duke, off to its best start since 1988, took advantage of six turnovers to defeat Georgia Tech, 27-12, at Atlanta.

Baldwin, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading rusher, scored on runs of one, two and six yards and Duke, 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, added Tom Cochran’s field goals of 28 and 21 yards.

Georgia Tech (1-2, 0-1) scored on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Luginbill to Charlie Simmons to cut Duke’s lead to 17-6 with 3:07 to play in the third quarter.

The Yellowjackets, however, bobbled the snap on the extra point and Duke, which won its first five games in 1988, added 10 fourth-quarter points.

No. 24 North Carolina State 38, Western Carolina 13--Brian Fitzgerald rushed for 114 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns to lead the Wolfpack at Raleigh, N.C.

Fitzgerald, who carried 18 times in the first 100-yard game of his career, scored on runs of four and two yards as North Carolina State (3-0) grabbed a 14-0 lead 12 minutes into the game. Then, the Wolfpack let its nationally ranked defense take over.

Western Carolina (2-2) came into the game averaging 247 yards per game on the ground, but was limited to five yards in 13 carries in the first half.

Maryland 31, Wake Forest 7--Kevin Foley passed for two touchdowns and deposed starter Scott Milanovich passed for one at College Park, Md.

Maryland (2-2, 1-2) built a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter, then kept Wake Forest at bay by forcing four turnovers.
