As expected, Fullerton’s defense had a great deal of trouble stopping El Camino in a Mission Conference game Saturday night at Titan Stadium.

Quarterback Steve Sarkisian threw for 409 yards and four touchdowns as El Camino won, 28-10. The Warriors are ranked 15th in the nation by the J.C. Grid-Wire.

The surprise was how much trouble Fullerton had scoring against the El Camino defense. The Hornets were coming off a 39-39 tie against Mt. San Antonio.

Marc O’Brien, the Hornet quarterback, was solid, passing for 249 yards (20 of 35) but none for touchdowns. He also was sacked four times.

Fullerton’s touchdown came on a two-yard run by Michael Jacot with 49 seconds left. Jacot, a reserve, led the Hornets with 49 yards in four carries.

Fullerton (0-1-1) trailed at the half, 21-3, but with a little better performance inside the 20, it might have been much closer.

The Hornets’ first drive reached the El Camino five before stalling. Then a bad snap led to a missed 23-yard field-goal attempt by Joel Vazquez.

Vazquez missed a 39-yard attempt on the Hornets’ next drive as well.

Fullerton’s next two possessions ended in punts. Then the Hornets turned the ball over on downs.

Vazquez kicked a 39-yard field goal with 40 seconds left in the first half to cut the El Camino lead to 21-3.

El Camino (2-0) had much more success on offense, mainly because of Sarkisian. He completed a 69-yard touchdown pass to Russell Shaw with 11 minutes 15 seconds left in the half to put the Warriors ahead, 21-0. Shaw ran a deep pattern in the middle of the field and got behind Fullerton defenders.

El Camino’s Morell Ollis caught an 86-yard touchdown pass with 14:49 left in the second quarter to put El Camino ahead, 14-0. He also got behind the Fullerton secondary.

Sarkisian’s performance was expected by Fullerton Coach Gene Murphy. Last week, he said if his team failed to apply pressure, Sarkisian would dominate, as he did last season when he passed for 367 yards in a 31-30 loss to Fullerton.

This time, he was 24 of 33 for 408 yards. Two passes were intercepted and four were dropped. Kevin Shoup and Peter Burton had the interceptions for the Hornets.

Sarkisian did most of his damage in the first half, going 13 of 16 for 292 yards and three touchdowns.
