HUNTINGTON BEACH

Woman Accepted to Coast Guard Academy

Lisa Elizabeth Knopf is headed for the high seas--sort of.

The daughter of Richard and Shirley Knopf of Huntington Beach has been accepted as a cadet at the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Knopf is a distinguished honor graduate of Edison High School and was one of 274 people sworn into the Coast Guard Academy Class of 1998 in July. She is one of 59 women accepted into the academy this year.

Knopf’s acceptance is a significant accomplishment, since appointments are given based solely on merit, with nationwide competition. This year, more than 5,000 applicants competed for the 275 positions in the class of 1998.

Knopf will undertake a four-year training and education program at the New London, Conn., academy. Upon completion of the program, she will receive a bachelor of science degree and a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Coast Guard.

BUENA PARK

District Offers Free, Discounted Meals

Needy children do not need to go hungry. The Centralia School District offers free and reduced-price lunches and breakfasts to qualified students under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program.

Household size and income determine eligibility for the meals, although families on food stamps, Aid to Families with Dependent Children or American Indian assistance programs are automatically eligible.

Each student’s household will receive an application this month that must be returned to the school. Applications may also be picked up at any school office and returned anytime during the school year.

The Centralia School District serves elementary schools in Anaheim, Buena Park and La Palma.

LOS ALAMITOS

Bus Fees to Remain Same as Last Year

School officials have good news for parents. Students taking the bus to school will be charged the same fees as last year, according to officials of the Los Alamitos Unified School District.

The fees will remain at $252 a year for one child, $162 for a second child and $90 for a third child. There is no charge for a fourth child or more.

If a child uses a wheelchair, the parents must make sure it meets state and federal design standards.

Students from other districts who are attending schools in the Los Alamitos school district are eligible to use school buses provided they take regular routes and space is available.
