Police Check Case of Man Shot in Neck at a Friend’s Home

A Santa Ana man was shot and wounded late Sunday night at a Newport Beach home of an acquaintance, police said.

Timothy Becker, 31, was listed in stable condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange on Monday after being shot in the neck, said Sgt. Andy Gonis. Becker and the woman who lived there, 47-year-old Charlene Dryer, knew each other and might have once been romantically involved, police said.

Police believe 28-year-old Mark Sobolewski of San Clemente shot Becker, but no arrests were made while investigators sorted out circumstances of the incident, which took place just before midnight, Gonis said. Sobolewski’s relationship to Dryer was still unclear, he said.

Police believe Becker was shot after he showed up at Dryer’s house, and Sobolewski was there.

Police answered a report of a burglary and shots fired at the home in the 1800 block of Irvine Avenue, Gonis said. They arrived to find Becker wounded, he said.
