Todos Hermanos, a recently formed gang prevention program in Costa Mesa, is sponsoring a softball game today aimed at striking out gang violence.

The event will be at Lions Park from noon to 5 p.m. The first pitch will be thrown out by Newport-Mesa Unified School District Supt. Mac Bernd.

Former, current and wanna-be gang members, parents, City Council members, students and a number of local youth organizations will take part in the event, said Roy Alvarado, president of the nonprofit Todos Hermanos.

“The purpose is to bring the community together to support each other and become friends,” Alvarado said.

The event is free and all proceeds from food sales will benefit the group, which provides a variety of gang prevention activities.
