FRIDAY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Dorsey Ground Game Buries Generals

Dorsey 27, Washington 13--Dorsey used a balanced running attack to overcome a one-man show by Washington’s Dennis Northcutt and beat the Generals at Washington.

Dorsey running backs Jamell Gordon, Raymont Skaggs and Bervick Deculius combined for 214 rushing yards. Gordon stood out among the Don backs with 84 yards and three touchdowns.

Even as his Generals fell to their conference rival Dorsey, Northcutt, the 5-11, 145-pound junior, stood tall against Dorsey’s big, touted defense, rushing for 108 yards in 19 carries. He also scored on an 81-yard kickoff return, which tied the score at 7-7 in the first quarter.

Bell 28, Jordan 0--Gustavo Valenzuela passed for 156 yards and three touchdowns, and Bell’s defense forced seven turnovers as the Eagles won a Southeastern Conference game at Jordan.

Valenzuela’s favorite target was Gerardo Herrera, who caught four passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Vern Bernard established the ground attack with 111 yards in 17 carries and a touchdown.

Nate Turner was the Bulldogs’ lone bright spot, catching three passes for 62 yards. The loss was Jordan’s 30th in a row.

Eagle Rock 11, Lincoln 8--Lincoln’s Alex Minero returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, but it was not enough to keep Eagle Rock from winning its fourth consecutive game, a Northern Conference contest at Lincoln.

Eagle Rock immediately cut Lincoln’s lead to 8-6 when fullback Marco Hernandez scored on a 48-yard run on the Eagles’ first possession. Joe Albarran ‘s 32-yard field goal put Eagle Rock ahead, 9-8, and from there the defense for both teams took over.

Lincoln had 73 yards in total offense and gave up the game’s final points on a fourth-quarter safety.

Wilson 27, Hollywood 12--Wilson quarterback Eddie Gonzalez completed 13 of 18 passes for 243 yards to lead the Mules in the Northern Conference game. Buster Bradley caught four passes for 159 yards, including touchdown receptions of 78, 18 and 43 yards.

Running Back Arlin Slayton, who rushed for 145 yards in 10 carries, raced for a 65-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage for the Mules, who jumped to a 14-0 second-quarter lead.

Belmont 0, Verdugo Hills 0--The Dons and the Sentinels seemed to have their backs to the line of scrimmage more than they faced it as they racked up numerous penalties in the scoreless tie at Belmont. In one drive in which the Sentinels emerged with few penalties, running back Fabian Villa had runs of 17 and 16 yards to bring Belmont tantalizingly close to the end zone at the 28-yard line. Villa finished with 87 yards in 13 carries.

South Gate 34, Huntington Park 7--The Rams compiled 389 yards in total offense and held the Spartans to 72 yards in a Southeastern Conference victory.

South Gate quarterback Juan Vasquez completed six of 10 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Vasquez’s favorite target, Eddie Montez, had four receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

La Mirada 38, Jefferson 9--On the strength of two interceptions in the fourth quarter--one returned 35 yards for a touchdown by Eric Martinez--La Mirada broke away from Jefferson to win an intersectional game.

Martinez’s interception at the five-minute mark began a string of 21 straight points by the Matadors.

Jefferson’s Nijiya Martin caught four passes for 66 yards and the Democrats’ one touchdown.

Democrat running back Isaac Hatley was held to 31 yards in 11 carries.

Verbum Dei 15, Compton 6--While its offense controlled the game with a ball-control attack, Verbum Dei’s defense took care of half the scoring in a nonleague victory at Compton.

On the game’s second play, Verbum Dei linebacker Frank Harris put the Eagles ahead by a touchdown on a 14-yard interception return.

On the ensuing kickoff Tim Nelson raced 74 yards for a touchdown to bring Compton to within a point, 7-6, after a failed point-after attempt.

Verbum Dei’s defense held Compton to 66 yards rushing.

Fremont 14, Garfield 0--Fremont used a blitzing defense to record four sacks and hold Garfield to 155 yards in total offense during a Southeastern Conference game Friday.

The Pathfinders, who had not beaten Garfield in four seasons, scored their first touchdown on Ricky Lloyd’s one-yard run in the second quarter. Michael Adams caught a 29-yard pass from junior quarterback Robert Loera to highlight the eight-play, 65-yard drive.

Franklin 34, Marshall 21--Jeff Deno completed 10 of 21 passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Panthers to a Northern Conference victory at Poly High.

Franklin parlayed three Marshall turnovers into scores to overcome a 14-6 second-quarter deficit. Octavio Verduzco rushed 14 times for 82 yards and a touchdown and Johnnie Sanders had touchdown receptions of 13 and 14 yards for the Panthers.

Anthony Martin scored twice for Marshall, on runs of 11 and one yard, to help the Barristers to a 14-14 tie at the half.

Records: Marshall 0-4; Franklin 3-1.

Roosevelt 23, Locke 22--Though Locke dominated most of the Southeastern Conference game, the Roughriders mounted a dramatic fourth-quarter drive with running back John Pineda’s one-yard touchdown run, followed by his two-point conversion, deciding the game.

With 12 seconds left, Roughrider quarterback Fernando Delgadillo threw a 30-yard pass to wide receiver Iev Villanueva on the one-yard line. Delgadillo handed off the ball to Pineda, who scored on a sweep. Pineda ran up the middle for the two-point conversion.

Sirr Parker rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

Records: Locke 1-3; Roosevelt 3-1.
