Mistrial Declared in Hurley Case

A motorist who collided with Sacramento Kings’ guard Bobby Hurley could face another reckless driving trial, a prosecutor said Monday.

Judge Roland L. Candee declared a mistrial Monday in Sacramento after jurors deadlocked 10-2 in favor of convicting Daniel Wieland, 38.

Deputy District Attorney A.J. Pongratz called a retrial on the misdemeanor charge “a definite probability.”

Wieland’s station wagon collided with Hurley’s four-wheel-drive vehicle Dec. 12 on a dark roadway near Arco Arena after a King game.

Hurley suffered broken ribs, lung injuries, a compression fracture in his back and other injuries.

The criminal sexual conduct charge against former Minnesota Viking Joey Browner was dropped.

A University of Kentucky baseball player’s mysterious death in June was the result of a hypersensitive reaction to medication that damaged his heart, doctors said.

Troy Trumbo, 20, of Danville, was taking several types of medication for a cough, cold and back pain when he died June 15, team doctors said.

Against her father’s wishes, but with his consent, 14-year-old Venus Williams is going to become a professional.

Williams, a Los Angeles native who trains in Delray Beach, Fla., will compete in the Bank of the West Classic in Oakland, an indoor tournament beginning Oct. 31.

Congress will hold renewed hearings on the baseball strike by the end of January, said Rep. Pat Williams (D-Mont.), chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor.

“I think it’s likely the House will likely pass either or both antitrust legislation or binding arbitration legislation if we have seen no action by January,” Williams said.
