MALL OPENINGS: Here’s an update for mall-starved shoppers in the Northridge area. Two of the high-profile stores in quake-devastated Northridge Fashion Center--Broadway and Sears--will reopen next month. Broadway will be ready for business Nov. 4, with Sears to follow two weeks later. . . . The rest of the mall will open gradually throughout 1995, with Bullock’s scheduled for late fall.

SMOKEY: A Motown legend is coming to help out quake-damaged Northridge Hospital Medical Center. Smokey Robinson will entertain at tonight’s benefit in Beverly Hills for the hospital, which suffered $28 million in damage. . . . The hospital, which needs $4 million to cover its portion of repairs, has collected $223,000 for the event.

FUN CAMPUS: Cal State Northridge isn’t just a place to make the grades. From beer to billiards, from music to movies, the campus offers students a range of options outside the classroom. Activities are open to the public, as well (Valley Life! Page 10). . . . One popular hangout is The Game Room at the Student Union, where junior Kotaro Kawamata, above, plays a video game.

HOOPS: Despite talk of basketball labor problems too, NBA training camps open this week. Among the players reporting for work will be several Valley alums. . . . Ex-local players include: Mitchell Butler (Oakwood High), Lucious Harris and Trevor Wilson (Cleveland High), and Isaiah Rider Jr. (Antelope Valley College).

NOISY DRAMA: A young theater in Glendale is making some noise. It’s A Noise Within, a classical theater company beginning its third season. This fall’s offerings include John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” and Shakespeare’s “King Lear.” . . . The group also hopes to move to a mid-sized house, and will become a touring company under an Equity touring contract. See Valley Life! Page 3.
