PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Long Drive Lifts Capistrano Valley Over Foothill

Brett Thompson’s 41-yard field goal with 10 minutes 54 seconds left in the fourth quarter was the difference as host Capistrano Valley beat Foothill, 17-14, Friday night in a nonleague football game.

But the game’s biggest play came in the third quarter, when Foothill had a chance to increase a 14-7 lead.

A pass by Capistrano Valley quarterback Tim Hirchag was intercepted by Foothill’s Steve Prutsok, who returned it 28 yards to the Cougars’ one. But Prutsok fumbled and Capistrano Valley recovered.

Hirchag, a sophomore, then guided the Cougars 99 yards in five plays as running back Charlie Landrigan scored on a one-yard run to tie it, 14-14, with 7:50 left in the third quarter.

“The whole game was wacky,” Capistrano Valley Coach Eric Patton said.

Capistrano Valley (3-2) scored in the game’s opening two minutes when tailback Malaefou MacKenzie, who played despite a hip pointer, scored on a 26-yard touchdown run.

Foothill tied the score when running back Nick Sveslosky, who rushed for 114 yards in 10 carries, broke loose for an 82-yard touchdown run with 9:18 left in the first quarter.

The Knights (1-4), who lost their fourth game in a row, took the lead on Tramel Robinson’s one-yard run with 2:17 left in the quarter, but failed to score again.
