PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Marina Tops Ocean View, Moves to 5-0

Share

Marina improved to 5-0, its best start since 1981, with a 34-7 nonleague victory over Ocean View on Friday at Westminster High.

The Vikings consistently started with good field position, with six of their 10 possessions starting in Ocean View territory thanks to good special teams play and two Seahawk turnovers.

The Vikings’ Mike Williams rushed for a game-high 114 yards and a touchdown in the first half, but sat out the second half icing a twisted right ankle. Williams, who has rushed for 668 yards this season, is expected to play in Thursday’s Sunset League opener at Los Alamitos.

Marina took a 7-0 lead midway through the opening quarter, as Chad Scuncio intercepted a Ted Norman pass at the Seahawk 6 and Williams scored three plays later on a one-yard run. The Vikings increased the lead to 17-0 at the half on a six-yard scoring pass from Matt Roberson to Joe Borzoni and a 40-yard field goal by Peter Mignosa.

Borzoni ran the second-half kickoff back 62 yards to the Ocean View 31. Micah Harrison eventually scored on a four-yard run to make it 24-0.

Ocean View got on the board with 5:05 left in the game, as Jason Hoffman scored on a one-yard run. The Seahawks have lost 34 consecutive games, the longest current losing streak in the state.
