The battle between two of Orange County’s finest running backs never materialized as Corona del Mar scored early and often to beat Santa Ana Valley, 55-13, Friday night at Newport Harbor.

Sea King senior Brian Hogan gained 159 yards in 23 carries and teammate Josh Walz rushed for 123 yards in 10 carries.

Santa Ana Valley senior Dwayne Cherrington was limited to 48 yards in 16 carries as the Sea King defense kept the Falcons (2-3) to 130 yards in total offense.

Corona del Mar (2-3) connected on its first drive, as Darren MacDonald caught a 14 yard screen pass from Walz just 5 minutes 38 seconds into the game.

The Sea Kings led 13-0 after one quarter after J.J. DiCesare ran five yards for the first of his two rushing touchdowns.

DiCesare finished the game with 68 yards in six carries.

The Sea King defense kept the Falcons off guard all evening. Billy Taketa ran an interception 46 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and Fred Garcia recovered two fumbles, the latter for a Corona del Mar touchdown.

After Walz’s four-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, the Falcons’ Kyle Marks took the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
