PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Santiago’s Sokanthong Towers Over Bolsa Grande

There was nothing small about the numbers Santiago running back Tom Sokanthong, all 5 feet 7 inches of him, put up against visiting Bolsa Grande on Friday night at Garden Grove High.

The senior rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers to a 33-12 victory over Bolsa Grande in Garden Grove League action. Sokanthong added another 38 yards in offense on kickoff returns.

Santiago’s rushing attack of 268 yards was spread among five rushers and wide receiver Octavio Villa scored twice.

Santiago took advantage Steve Lopez’s 16-yard interception return to Bolsa Grande’s 23 to set up the first of Sokanthong’s five scores. He took a pitch from Christian Cortezand ran 14 yards for a touchdown.

Only minutes later Cortez found Villa for a 69-yard scoring bomb. Cortez added another score himself running one in from 10 yards out in the third quarter for a 27-6 lead.

Bolsa Grande (1-4, 0-2) scored early in the first minute of the second quarter on Eric Shaner’s 12-yard run.

Villa scored his second touchdown on a 10-yard run with 9:31 remaining in the half to give the Cavaliers a 21-6 lead.
