Share

Travis Ponn rushed for 94 yards in 11 carries and two touchdowns as Lakewood Mayfair defeated Calvary Chapel, 25-13, Saturday night at Newport Harbor.

Ponn and quarterback Sean Augustine were the main offensive weapons for the Monsoons (3-2). Augustine threw for 79 yards and one touchdown and ran for 52 yards in 16 carries, including the team’s first score. That came on a 14-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, giving Mayfair a 7-0 lead.

Augustine made it 13-0 with a 15-yard pass to Dan August with about eight minutes remaining in the first half. August caught four passes for 49 yards to lead the Monsoons.

The Calvary Chapel offense was lead by senior quarterback Waylan Kruse. Kruse completed eight of 13 passes for 117 yards before injuring his ankle late in the first half. The Eagles (3-2) went to their fourth-string quarterback, Mark Echan, and relied primarily on their running game during the second half. Ken Nash had 117 yards rushing, 73 in the second half.

Lineman Steve Eby recovered a bad snap on a punt attempt in the end zone to cut the Monsoon lead to 13-7, but that was the closest the Eagles came all night. Mayfair scored the next 12 points on two Ponn runs (one and eight yards) to put the game out of reach.
