Notes on a Scorecard - Oct. 12, 1994

The NFL schedule-maker has created a hardship for the Raiders. . . .

How shocking. . . .

They are taking their two longest trips of the season, to New England and Miami, during consecutive weeks. . . .

“This is the best Dolphin team in a while because they can stop the run,” said Miami talk-show host and ESPN prognosticator Hank Goldberg. “Not that it takes much to stop the Raiders’ rushing attack. This should be what I call a two-meal game. It will take a long time to play because there will be so much passing.” . . .

“Don Shula is as good a coach as he ever was,” Goldberg said. “None of that stuff about Jimmy Johnson replacing him was true. Don has a good relationship with Wayne Huizenga and he’ll probably fulfill the last two years of his contract.”. . .

Miami fans are so excited about the Dolphins that the remainder of the home schedule, except for the game against the Indianapolis Colts, is sold out. . . .

The quarterback draw, last seen executed on TV by the New York Giants’ Dave Brown and the Raiders’ Jeff Hostetler for touchdowns, always seems to work. . . .

Minnesota wide receiver Qadry Ismail’s Monday was a lot more productive than older brother Rocket’s Sunday. . . .

Al Michaels neglected to mention it by name, but Hamilton High is the school that both he and Warren Moon attended. . . .

Fashion note: Dan Reeves, a protege of Tom Landry, is the only NFL coach who wears a coat and tie. . . .

The scary thing about the unbeaten San Diego Chargers is that they will play four of their last five games at home. . . .

This was supposed to be the year of the quarterback in the Pacific 10 Conference. . . .

But only Steve Stenstrom of Stanford, who ranks third in the nation in total offense, is living up to his billing in the year of the Pac-10’s 2-6 record against the Western Athletic Conference. . . .

On Saturday, Stenstrom will have the opportunity to pick on a porous USC secondary at Palo Alto. . . .

True freshman Brian Kelly might be the Trojans’ best defensive back. He better be pretty good because he wears No. 42, which once belonged to Ronnie Lott. . . .

The Trojans would be wise to pound it out on the ground against the weak Stanford defense and keep the ball away from Stenstrom. . . .

UCLA is fortunate that it won’t have to face Oregon State freshman quarterback Tim Alexander, who was outstanding in relief against USC until he suffered a broken collarbone in the fourth quarter. . . .

The Bruins shouldn’t be worried that they will get booed Saturday at the Rose Bowl. They should be worried that there won’t be enough fans in the stadium to make a lot of noise. . . .

Rick Neuheisel is getting rave notices for his work with quarterback Kordell Stewart at Colorado, but another ex-Bruin assistant coach, Alabama offensive coordinator Homer Smith, is getting roasted by fans who don’t think the unbeaten Crimson Tide is scoring enough points. . . .

No jockey in Southern California has been riding as hard and as well in recent months as Corey Nakatani, who has started the Oak Tree meet with 14 victories in six days. . . .

A couple of females, Hollywood Wildcat and Flanders, might be the two most dominant horses on Breeders’ Cup Day. . . .

The pay-per-view fight card from the new, 52,000-seat Wembley Stadium in Hong Kong will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. That’s 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, our time. The format is U.S. vs. Great Britain and one of the four fights will be Rafael Ruelas’ defense of the International Boxing Federation lightweight title against Billy Schwer. . . .

Humberto (Chiquita) Gonzalez-Michael Carbajal III has been signed for Nov. 12 at Mexico City on a card that will include Genaro Hernandez’s return to the ring against Jimmy Garcia. . . .

Channel 2 sportscaster Jim Hill has been elected to the board of directors of the local chapter of the Urban League. . . .

According to a study conducted by the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management, major sporting events in the L.A. area last year pumped $2 billion into the local economy. . . .

Three thousand voters polled by the L.A. Sports Council will decide what events are included in “Unforgettable: The 100 Greatest Moments in Los Angeles Sports History,” to be published late next year. . . .

Because of the presence of a certain .202 hitter, the Birmingham Barons led all Class AA baseball teams in home attendance with 467,867. . . .

Among the items in the Dodger locker display at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., is a Darryl Strawberry bat.
