PREP ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills Goes Overtime to Beat Fullerton
Paul Carr scored a goal with a minute left in overtime to give Sunny Hills a 9-8 Freeway League water polo victory over Fullerton Wednesday at Sunny Hills High.
The game was close all the way. But it was Sunny Hill’s goalie Cody Bitterlich who proved to be the nemesis to Fullerton’s offense, recording 21 saves, including some key ones in overtime.
Jason Fairchild led the Lancers with three goals and Bill Brown was Fullerton’s top scorer with four. Sunny Hills improves to 1-1 in league; Fullerton remains winless in league at 0-2. In other Freeway League water polo:
Buena Park 12, Sonora 6--Gregg Petriseac and Daniel Vancin each scored three goals in the victory.
La Habra 10, Troy 7--Don Ploog, who had five goals, scored No. 108 of the season for visiting La Habra. Natt Jewett had four and teammate Jason Link added three for the Highlanders, who improve to 16-6, 2-0.
In the Century League:
Foothill 20, El Modena 6--Jeff Pflueger led the fourth-ranked Knights (9-2, 2-0) over the Vanguards (1-1) with his five goals.
Villa Park 20, Orange 1--Brian Pharris scored five goals and Joey Pacelli, J.M. Wright and Kyle Baumgarner each scored three goals to lead host Villa Park (13-5, 2-0), ranked ninth.
In the Sea View League:
Corona del Mar 15, Newport Harbor 9--Neil Hueston scored five goals for Corona del Mar (7-3, 2-0). Gabe Wyatt was a one-man team for Newport Harbor, scoring all nine goals.
Irvine 11, Woodbridge 6--Doug Tabbert, Ray Wong, Jordan Knickmeyer, Jeff Higley and Steve Carrera each scored two goals to lead visiting Irvine (7-10, 1-1).
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 21, Savanna 3--Mo Degenhardt scored four goals and Eric Matthews and Tim Bischel each scored three to lead No. 6 Brea-Olinda (16-1, 3-0).
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 13, Edison 2--Mike Stanley scored four goals, Jason Mericle added three and Peter Lange recorded 12 saves to lead host Esperanza (12-5, 2-0), ranked seventh.
In South Coast League girls’ cross-country:
Trabuco Hills 26, Dana Hills 29--Melissa Keenan finished second (19:06), Megan MaCleod took third (19:09) and Peggy Hall finished fourth (19:15) to lead host Trabuco Hills (3-0) to the upset. Sophomore Sidney Leonard finished in a course record 18:42 for No. 7 Dana Hills (2-1).
In South Coast League boys’ cross-country:
Dana Hills 23, Trabuco Hills 36--Mike Rabus finished third (16:39) and Jason Carmean finished fourth for host Trabuco Hills (0-3). No. 9 Dana Hills improved to 3-0.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Marina 10, Irvine 8--The No. 3 doubles team of Kelly Lambert and Stephanie Morel were the only Vikings to win all three sets in the nonleague victory.
