Notre Dame Tackle Still Hospitalized : High school football: Forlano’s condition two days after brain surgery has doctors puzzled.

Senior lineman Peter Forlano of Notre Dame High, who underwent brain surgery Tuesday for a mysterious ailment, remains hospitalized in serious condition as doctors continue to struggle to find a cause.

Forlano was admitted to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank on Friday night after complaining of dizziness, numbness of the right leg and blurred vision, his mother Alice said Thursday.

On Tuesday, doctors relieved pressure from the left side of Forlano’s brain and conducted a series of tests.

Doctors believe Forlano’s condition might be the result of a severe sinus infection but no diagnosis has been made, his mother said.

Forlano also has had difficulty speaking and is heavily medicated. He had experienced a loss of movement in his right leg but had regained some mobility by Thursday evening.

“It’s really bizarre,” Alice Forlano said. “They thought maybe it was a virus at first. They don’t know if it was an injury or what. It’s affecting the right side of his body.”

Forlano, a 6-foot, 205-pound starting right tackle, is in the hospital’s critical care unit. A hospital spokesman declined comment because Forlano, 17, is a minor.

Forlano left school Friday afternoon before practice. He had not complained of any football-related injuries, Coach Kevin Rooney said.

“He said he felt awful and that he hadn’t been able to sleep for the past few days,” Rooney said. “Everyone is worried about it. It’s tough because no one really knows what’s going on. Everybody is concerned and chomping at the bit to go and see him and cheer him up. But we can’t do that until he is out of (critical) care.”

Alice Forlano said her son began having memory lapses Thursday night after practice.

“He’d be on the phone and he couldn’t remember who he was talking to,” she said.
