QUAKE FUND-RAISERS: To help the earthquake-damaged St. James Presbyterian Church of Tarzana, a contemporary choir festival will be staged tonight and Sunday night at the First Presbyterian Church of Sherman Oaks.

The performances, starting at 7:30 p.m. both days, will feature choirs from Brentwood and Canoga Park Presbyterian churches as well as from the Tarzana congregation.

Next Saturday, a poster of the movie “Clear and Present Danger,” autographed by actor Harrison Ford and other cast members, will be raffled at St. James Presbyterian during a fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on its grounds at 19414 Ventura Blvd., Tarzana. Food, entertainment and games are also scheduled.

HINDU FESTIVAL: The Hindu holiday of Dusserah, which involves stories of good over evil, will be observed tonight at the Hindu Temple and Indian Cultural Center in Chatsworth with a costumed procession in the area around the building at 21213 Devonshire St.

The procession will begin after 5:30 p.m. and services will follow in the temple.

SPIRITUALITY/MYSTICISM: Jewish spirituality and mystical interpretations of the Torah will be explored in separate adult education series at two San Fernando Valley synagogues, starting on Wednesday.

Rolf Gompertz, author of “Sparks of Spirit,” will lead a six-session seminar on “Discovering and Exploring Our Spirituality” at Adat Ari El, 12020 Burbank Blvd., North Hollywood, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Gompertz, a local public relations consultant, will focus on the insights of contemporary writers on Jewish mysticism and spirituality.

At Temple Beth Torah, 16651 Rinaldi St., Granada Hills, Rabbi E. Robert Kraus will lead a class for four weeks at 8 p.m. each Wednesday on “Mystical Interpretations of Our Sacred Torah.” The course is free. For information, call (818) 831-0835.

GUEST SPEAKER: Blenda J. Wilson, president of Cal State University Northridge, will be the guest speaker Sunday in the 10:45 a.m. service of the Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society, 9550 Haskell Ave., North Hills.

The congregation recently burned its 30-year mortgage on its building, known popularly as “The Onion” because of its unusual architecture.

AUTOGRAPHING RABBI: Rabbi Harold Schulweis, whose book “For Those Who Can’t Believe: Overcoming the Obstacles to Faith” was released in mid-September, will be signing copies of the HarperCollins book at a 2 p.m. reception Sunday at the synagogue where he is senior rabbi, Valley Beth Shalom, 15730 Ventura Blvd., Encino.
