ORANGE LEAGUE : Brea-Olinda Gets Past Anaheim

Share

Reuben Droughns proved again Thursday night that he is the best running back in the county, but his passing abilities doomed Anaheim in its 14-10 loss to Brea-Olinda at Glover Stadium.

The Colonists had the ball at Brea-Olinda’s 14 with less than a minute left when Droughns took a pitch from quarterback Rudy Herrera and swept right. He tried to throw the ball across the field to Herrera, but the Wildcats’ Ben Evers intercepted Droughns’ pass and returned it 34 yards to seal the victory.

Brea-Olinda (5-1-1, 1-0-1) had taken a 14-10 lead with 1 minute 30 seconds left on a 63-yard touchdown pass from Matt Kalcevich to Andy Wirz.

Anaheim (5-1-1, 0-1-1) had the ball on its 35 after Wirz’s kickoff landed out of bounds. Droughns then single-handedly put the Colonists in scoring position. He caught a pass from Herrera behind the line of scrimmage and took it 30 yards to Brea-Olinda’s 35. He then rushed for 15 and six yards before his pass ended Anaheim’s chances.

Droughns finished with 120 yards in 21 carries. Brea-Olinda held him to six yards in seven carries in the first half, but he broke loose for a 36-yard touchdown run with 2:12 left in the third quarter to tie the game, 7-7.

Tony Vasquez kicked a 47-yard field goal with 7:58 left, giving Anaheim a 10-7 lead.

Brea-Olinda took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Jerome Owens’ two-yard touchdown run, which was set up by a 45-yard pass from Kalcevich to Wirz, putting the Wildcats at Anaheim’s four-yard line.

The Colonists sacked Brea-Olinda quarterbacks five times, including four in the second half, when they held the Wildcats to 78 yards.
