Charles Chatman rushed for 251 yards and four touchdowns in 27 carries, leading Costa Mesa to a 55-12 Pacific Coast League victory over Estancia Friday night at Newport Harbor High School.

Chatman ran for a 65-yard touchdown on the game’s first play, and a 39-yard touchdown on Costa Mesa’s next possession. That run gave him 139 yards with 6 minutes 58 seconds left in the first quarter, and again it appeared he would threaten the county single-game rushing record of 418, set by Dana Hills’ Jim Gleed in 1979.

Last week, Chatman ran for 414 yards against Aliso Niguel, but Estancia (3-5, 0-3) held him to 48 yards the rest of the half.

“I figured I wasn’t going to get too many more yards,” Chatman said. “I figured they were going to key on me, and that opened up the passing game, which was good for the team.”

Chatman added a one-yard run in the second quarter, then Costa Mesa quarterback Ryan Taylor hit Brian Reeves for scoring passes of 32 and 30 yards in the second and third quarter.

Chatman scored on a 13-yard run with nine minutes left, giving Costa Mesa (7-1, 3-0) a 42-6 lead. Joey Archuletta scored on a one-yard run with 6:18 left.

Estancia scored on one-yard runs by Frough Jahid in the second quarter and Oscar Lomeli with 43 seconds left.
