Pacifica Fans Cheer These Song-and-Dance Routines

The Times’ attack on Pacifica High School’s cheerleaders (Oct. 29) was vicious and shallow. Pacifica’s cheer squad can be ranked among the best in Orange County, both in athletic ability and in dedication to supporting Pacifica’s teams, win or lose. If you think the dance routine at the end of the first quarter (Oct. 28) was a little long and complex, maybe you should reconsider why people come at all.

Parents, students and other fans come to see not only the game, but the band, the drill team and, yes, the cheerleaders. Their performances are often as entertaining, and it is their fans’ (support) that sustains a great end-of-the-week evening format for all students to participate in.

Apparently, The Times is under the impression that this is professional sports, or believes we should foster the sexist notion that cheerleaders are best when they shake their fannies at appropriate lulls in the “real show.” Get with it! And stop dumping garbage on people who work hard to make this a fun experience. Since when did crowd noise while the other team has the ball warrant scorn?
