PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : MacKenzie Helps Capistrano Valley Win a Quick One

Share

It took exactly 5 minutes 13 seconds for Capistrano Valley to begin thinking about next week’s important game against Trabuco Hills.

That’s how long the Cougar offense had the ball in their first four possessions of Friday’s 32-6 victory over winless Dana Hills. The Cougars’ first nine plays produced four touchdowns.

Capistrano Valley (5-4, 2-1) plays at Trabuco Hills Thursday in the South Coast League finale. The game has Division I playoff implications for both teams. Mater Dei, which plays Dana Hills (0-9, 0-4) next week, is the league champion.

“Every game counts but that one really counts,” Cougar Coach Eric Patton said. “It’s a tough way to end the (regular) season, but that’s the way it should be. We’ve got to beat Trabuco to make the playoffs.”

Capistrano Valley needed only eight carries by sophomore tailback Malaefou MacKenzie, who gained 185 yards and scored on runs of 73, 18 and 26 yards, to defeat the Dolphins.

The Cougar defense sacked Dana Hills quarterback Scott Maynard eight times for minus-64 yards and allowed the Dolphins 101 total yards.

About the only highlight for the Dolphins was two blocked punts by Kory Seitz. Both times Dana Hills had the ball in good scoring position--at the Cougar 12 and 8--but failed to score until two minutes remained in the game on a 10-yard pass from Maynard.
