A 38-year-old Lancaster woman was arrested on suspicion of setting fire to her daughter’s apartment after sheriff’s deputies smelled a flammable liquid when they questioned the woman, authorities said Sunday.

Tania Hurd, 18, told deputies that she saw her mother, Cheryl Hurd-Preyer, running from the apartment in the 4800 block of West Avenue L-8 just after she noticed that a windowsill was on fire, said Deputy Rich Erickson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Hurd and her mother had been involved in an ongoing dispute, Erickson said.

Hurd’s month-old infant was sleeping in another bedroom on the other side of the apartment house when the fire began about 7 p.m. Saturday, he said. Hurd’s boyfriend, who was not identified, also was inside the apartment when flames broke out, Erickson said.

Hurd-Preyer of Lancaster was questioned at her home and arrested after deputies detected the odor of a flammable liquid when they spoke with the woman, Erickson said. She was booked on suspicion of residential arson at the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station and is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, he said.

No one was injured in the fire, which caused only minor damage.
