It might have taken September, October and part of November, but the Cincinnati Bengals finally won a game.

After eight consecutive losses and approaching last season’s mark of futility, the Bengals defeated the Seattle Seahawks in overtime Sunday, 20-17.

Jeff Blake passed for 387 yards and Doug Pelfrey won the game with his sixth field goal, a 26-yarder with 6:46 to play in the extra period.

Such was the heady scent of victory that the Bengals began to think intoxicating thoughts.

“Who knows after you win one?” Pelfrey said. “We could end up with eight wins.”

The victory broke a 15-game road losing streak for the Bengals and marked their second strong game. Last week they lost to the Dallas Cowboys, 23-20, in a game in which they led at halftime, 14-0.

Against Seattle, the Bengals (1-8) set up their winning field goal on a 76-yard pass from Blake to Darnay Scott, a rookie from San Diego State. Pelfrey set a team record by also making kicks of 36, 44, 36, 47 and 28 yards.

Blake got most of the credit for the victory.

“He sparked a wave of enthusiasm for us,” Keith Rucker said. “He gave this team a different view of what’s going to happen every Sunday.”

The Bengals didn’t win until their 11th game last season. They also had a safety in handing the Seahawks (3-6) their fifth loss in a row.

A crowd of 46,630 saw the first NFL game of the season in the Kingdome, which was closed July 19 after ceiling tiles fell before a baseball game between the Mariners and Baltimore. The Kingdome underwent $32.5 million in roof and ceiling repairs, a job that might run $9 million over the budget.

The Seahawks played their first three home regular-season games and two home exhibition games at the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium.

Blake, who made his first NFL start last week and passed for 243 yards against the Cowboys, completed 31 of 43 passes, with one interception. A third-year pro from East Carolina, Blake is filling in for the injured David Klingler.

For the Seahawks, Rick Mirer completed 13 of 32 passes for 181 yards, with no interceptions.
