Volunteers are needed to help package gifts for those being honored at a special ceremony spotlighting the efforts of thousands of San Fernando Valley residents who provided important services during the recovery from the Jan. 17 Northridge earthquake.

The ceremony, “San Fernando Rebuilds,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and will include celebrity participation in softball, volleyball, basketball and other events. Mayor Richard Riordan is scheduled to speak.

The invitation-only event is at the Balboa Recreation Center at Burbank and Balboa boulevards in Encino. Volunteers are sought to help prepare packages of goods for more than 2,500 people who will be honored. The packages will be prepared at the recreation center. Volunteers may contact Horace Walker at (818) 882-3557.
