COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : ACROSS THE NATION : Georgia Tech Coach Lewis Steps Down

Georgia Tech football coach Bill Lewis resigned Monday night and the school named defensive coordinator George O’Leary to finish out the season.

Athletic Director Homer Rice said a search committee would be formed to seek a permanent replacement.

Lewis, who is to remain with the program, led the Yellow Jackets to an 11-19 record in three seasons. They are 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season.

Lewis, the ninth head coach in Georgia Tech history, signed a five-year rollover contract on Jan. 1, 1992.

The Yellow Jackets were 5-6 in each of Lewis’ first two seasons and have not beaten a Division 1-A team with a winning record since a 16-13 victory over North Carolina State on Oct. 3, 1992.

Lawyers for a group of University of Washington football players withdrew their motion for an injunction to temporarily end the probation that bars the Huskies from a bowl game this season. The players said they decided to give up their fight for a temporary injunction after their team lost, 46-28, to Stanford on Saturday. The loss gave Washington a 6-3 record, making it unlikely the team would be asked to a major bowl.

Sophomore Beau Morgan will start at quarterback for Air Force on Saturday against Utah. He replaces Preston McConnell, who suffered a shoulder injury Saturday in a 10-7 victory over Army.
