The mother of a newborn baby apparently discarded shortly after birth and killed by pit bulls in the back yard of a house in Pomona was arrested and booked for investigation of murder, police said Wednesday.

Police withheld the name of the 20-year-old woman and details about the case pending an afternoon news conference. But Police Lt. Ron Frazier confirmed that the mother was arrested Tuesday evening.

The newborn boy was killed by pit bulls Friday, apparently shortly after birth. “It appears to be a home birth that ended in the death of the infant boy,” Frazier said.

An autopsy determined the newborn was alive when he was abandoned in the yard and was mauled.

Two pit bulls were in the yard when police found the body. The boy was missing an arm and genitals and had head wounds.

Investigators and the Humane Society will determine the fate of the dogs.
