PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Los Amigos Flips Pacifica’s Playoff Hopes
Los Amigos used a balanced attack to stymie Pacifica’s playoff aspirations with a 35-19 Garden Grove League victory Friday night at Bolsa Grande.
A victory would have secured the league’s third playoff spot for the Mariners (5-5-, 3-3), who are now at the mercy of the result of a coin flip with Santiago and Garden Grove.
Eighth-ranked Los Amigos (9-1, 5-1) has already secured the league’s second playoff spot.
The Lobos struck first with 3 minutes 7 seconds left in the first quarter on Greg Fausto’s two-yard run. Each team committed two first-half turnovers, and although Pacifica’s lone score of the half was set up by a fumble on a botched reverse, it was the Mariners who made the costlier mistakes.
After Ryan Johansen passed to Casey Huffmire for a 23-yard score, the Mariners lost track of Lobo fullback Niu Satele. On a third-and-six play on the ensuing possession, Neval Tuato spotted Satele alone at the 25. The 6-foot, 230-pounder then barreled over two tacklers to complete the 39-yard scoring play, giving the Lobos a 21-7 lead.
On the Lobos’ next drive, Tuato connected with Satele on a similar play, this one covering 51 yards for a 28-7 lead.
Satele finished with five catches for 120 yards.
