PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : ORANGE LEAGUE : Droughns, Anaheim Beat Magnolia, 35-18

A disappointing season ended on a high note for Anaheim on Friday night and the Colonists certainly can hang on to one positive thought: Reuben Droughns will be back.

The Colonists started the 1994 season 5-0, but finished fifth in the Orange League despite Friday’s 35-18 homecoming victory over Magnolia. Droughns put forth a typical effort, rushing for 182 yards in 15 carries and scoring four times, including touchdown runs of 35 and 47 yards the first two times he touched the ball.

Droughns is on pace to become the leading rusher in Orange County history.

Anaheim struck quickly in the first quarter, needing only four offensive plays to score three times. Rudy Herrera connected with Travis Pena on the game’s opening play for a 75-yard touchdown. Interceptions by Charlie Reyes and Carlos Hernandez set up two Droughns scoring runs and the Colonists led, 21-0.

The Sentinels employed a full-house backfield and Tony Iliescu (101 yards), Sean Roy (59 yards), and Carlos Martin (53 yards) each scored a touchdown and paced a 233-yard rushing attack.

Martin scored first, finding a hole through the middle and going 27 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter. Iliescu recovered an Anaheim fumble on their next play from scrimmage, and Magnolia embarked on a 39-yard scoring drive, capped by a two-yard Roy run to make it 21-12.

The Colonists put it away with two touchdowns in a span of 1 minute 15 seconds early in the final period. Droughns made it 28-12 with a six-yard touchdown run, and brother Robert intercepted a Josh Reding pass two plays later, returning it 33 yards to the Magnolia 12.
