A touchdown run and two touchdown passes by Waylan Kruse helped Calvary Chapel past Brethren Christian, 34-15, Friday night at Artesia High. By winning, the Eagles finish in a tie for third and gained a probable playoff spot as a wild card.

The Warriors (1-9, 0-5) took the early lead when Ryan Babcock scored on a three-yard dive on the first possession of the game.

The Eagles did not waste time on their next drive (11 plays), which featured running back David Kuhn, who carried nine times for 61 yards. An eight-yard touchdown reception by Josh Young from Kruse tied the score, 7-7.

After the Warriors failed to convert on an Eagle fumble, Calvary Chapel took the lead on an 56-yard touchdown pass to Joe Jones from Kruse with 2:04 left in the first half.

The Eagles (6-4, 3-2) buried Brethren Christian with two third-quarter touchdowns. Kruse scored the first on a two-yard run with 9:28 left in the third quarter. Eight minutes later, Kuhn, who finished the game with 89 yards rushing, scored on a three-yard run.

An interception by Calvary Chapel’s Eric Thulander set up three rushes by Ken Nash, the last a one-yard touchdown run, to make it 34-7 with 4:01 left to play.

Babcock, who completed 10 of 32 passes for 210 yards, rushed six yards for a touchdown with a minute left.
