BIG EIGHT ROUNDUP : Big Day for Salaam as Colorado Romps

Rashaan Salaam broke three school records and teammates erased two more Saturday as seventh-ranked Colorado easily defeated Kansas, 51-26, at Lawrence, Kan.

Salaam, who finished with 232 yards and three touchdowns, set Colorado season records for rushing yards and touchdowns and broke Supreme Court Justice Byron White’s 57-year-old mark for most points in a season.

Colorado, 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Eight, scored on its first three possessions and was in full command with a 24-7 halftime lead over the Jayhawks (5-5, 2-4).

Salaam’s 1,796 yards with two games remaining erased the Colorado season mark of 1,628 set by Eric Bieniemy in 1990.

His 22 touchdowns broke the record Bobby Anderson established with 19 in 1969. His 132 points surpassed the 122 by White in 1937.

Also setting Colorado records were tight end Christian Fauria and receiver Michael Westbrook. Fauria’s got his 92nd catch to break the record Dave Hestera set in 1981-83. Westbrook had 70 receiving yards in the first quarter and wound up with 117, hiking his career total to 2,476 and breaking Charles Johnson’s mark of 2,447.

Oklahoma 33, Oklahoma State 14--Jerald Moore scored all five touchdowns for the Sooners (6-4, 4-2) at Stillwater, Okla., as they stretched their unbeaten streak against the Cowboys (3-6-1, 0-5-1) to 18 games.

Moore, who missed the previous two games with a hamstring injury, rushed for a career-high 151 yards and tied Steve Owens’ school record for touchdowns in a game.

Moore’s fourth touchdown widened the gap after Oklahoma State got within 19-14.
