Highlights

Villa Park won back-to-back Century League titles for the first time. Coach Len Whitacre, in his second year, led the Spartans to their best overall record (21-4). Villa Park was led by Maureen Skehan, the league’s player of the year. Skehan led the team in scoring (17.2 points per game), assists (six) and tied in rebounds (9.7). The Spartans expected to be seeded among the top four once the Division II-AA playoffs began, but the Southern Section never received all the statistics that were faxed, so Villa Park went in unseeded. The Spartans never led in their game against Oxnard Rio Mesa and lost, 55-44. Michelle Miyake led the Spartans with 15 points and Skehan added 13 points and five rebounds. . . El Modena also went down in the first round of the playoffs, losing to Cypress, 61-50, in Division II-A. Jamie Shine led the Vanguards with 12 points and six rebounds. . . Canyon defeated Pomona Garey, 46-41, in the first round of the Division II-A playoffs. Stacey Fish had 13 points and Sarah Spjut added 12 points and 14 rebounds. In the second round, the Comanches were outplayed by Troy and lost, 46-30. Robynn Kuhlmann didn’t play in the first quarter for disciplinary reasons, but tied for the team-high in scoring with nine points. Coach Nelson Herrera blamed the loss on “lack of experience.”
