OUTLOOK

Cahill begins his fifth season with the Vanguards. In his previous four, he has led his team to the league title twice and made four trips to the playoffs. To win another league title, El Modena is going to have to find a solid replacement for Jamie Shine, who averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds at the post. Filling in for Shine will be Mackie, Mariner and Potter, who Cahill plans to rotate inside. The Vanguards are going to have to get solid play out of these three to deal with the height of teams such as Canyon. Venturing from last year’s game plan, Cahill is going to use a three-guard rotation this season with Foyle, Herco and Kovacs, who he believes are the “best guards in the league.” Foyle, who averaged five assists, is the only senior and will be looked to for leadership. Herco is a shooting threat from the outside. Using a pressure defense, speed and outside shooting, Cahill hopes to counteract his lack of experience at the post. “We are going to be a different team without Shine,” he said. “If our post players can develop, we’ll be in good shape.” El Modena figures to finish among the top three and make it to the playoffs again, but they need one of their post players to become a force on the inside.
