Smoldering ashes in a trash can inside the garage of a house near Camarillo started a fire that caused $125,000 in damage early Sunday, fire officials said.

A smoke alarm woke up residents of the Deseo Avenue house about 4 a.m. Sunday, when flames from the trash can spread to the garage, Ventura County Fire Department officials said.

The fire was mostly limited to the garage, which received about $65,000 in structural damage, officials estimated. A small corner of the house also incurred damage, investigators said. The fire also destroyed about $60,000 in property, including a new van and a Honda Accord, officials said.
