OUTLOOK

The Coyotes are expected to be one of the league’s most improved teams. Even without a senior in the starting lineup, Buena Park had an excellent summer league, winning 20 games, which helped wipe away the taste of last season. “We learned that we could win,” Matillo said. Smith (11.1 point average) and Oliver (10.0) will shoulder the offensive load, with help from Gasso (8.0). The Coyotes are not big, but they can move and are now experienced with seven returning lettermen. Guard is the deepest position, with nine of the 14 roster players playing there. In addition to seeing a wide open league after Sonora, Matillo believes an above-.500 season and a playoff spot is within reach. “We have the talent to do that,” Matillo said. “Now we have to establish ourselves and see if we can make a move.”
