Although neither school can officially accept a bid until Sunday, the day after the regular season ends, Valley College and Moorpark appear headed for bowl games.

Valley (8-1) is almost assured of playing Rancho Santiago in the Orange County Bowl at Orange Coast College and Moorpark (7-2) apparently will face Cerritos in the Strawberry Bowl at Cerritos.

Those two games, and nine other junior college bowls throughout the state, will be held Dec. 3.

Both teams end their Western State Conference seasons tonight. Valley, 4-1 in the Southern Division, plays host to Santa Monica and Moorpark, 4-0 in the Northern Division, is at home against Santa Barbara.

Chuck Ferrero, Valley athletic director, said the Monarchs have been approached by the organizers of the Orange County Bowl but the final decision cannot be made until Sunday.

He said the invitation also possibly hinges on whether Valley defeats the Corsairs (5-4) tonight.

He speculated that a Monarch loss might send the bowl committee looking for a team with a better record. But the Monarchs are one of nine teams in the state going into games today with eight or nine victories.

John Keever, Moorpark athletic director, said the Raiders are practically guaranteed to play in a bowl for a seventh consecutive season.

“Most likely, we’ll be in it (Strawberry Bowl) no matter what happens (against Santa Barbara),” Keever said.

With Valley and Moorpark out of the picture, and Bakersfield (8-1) apparently prepared to accept an invitation to meet Long Beach City (9-1) in the Potato Bowl at Bakersfield, the task of playing host in the Western State Bowl would fall to someone else.

Aviva Kamin, Western State Conference commissioner, said Hancock (6-3) probably will be the conference representative in that game. In last year’s game, Valley defeated Moorpark, 21-19.
