OUTLOOK

“Transition year” seem to be the operative words for the Aztecs, who lost some of their bite--and size--to graduation and transfers. Linda Rodriguez’s graduation will hurt the team. But more than that, the departure of last year’s top player, Rhonda Gondringer, to Mater Dei will undoubtedly leave a big hole at guard and in team leadership. Also graduated is center Carrie Ogilvie, who transferred from Bethel Baptist last year. This season, the Aztecs have the dubious distinction of being one of the shortest teams in the county. And with no top returners to speak of, Tubbs is relying on Danyal and Shum to provide leadership and points. He’s hoping for strong performances from players coming from the junior varsity. There might be some spark from freshman Rains at guard. But like any transition year, Tubbs realizes that you have to wait to see who rises to the top. In addition, if Tubbs can’t find someone to play center, the Aztecs will be in for a long season. But make no mistake, the desire is there, Tubbs said. But lack of size, and a limited roster might be too much to overcome this year.
