OUTLOOK

After 10 years of struggling to build a lasting program here, Conrad Byars left Anaheim for Western High. In his stead, first year coach Castellanos will try and figure out how to make the Colonists more than just competitive. He inherits a team that won three league contests last season. Add in the fact Anaheim has no dominating player, and it’s easy to see what could lie ahead. “We’re going to play hard,” said Castellanos, who was previously an assistant for two years at Loara. “We’ve got tough kids, and they’re coachable. But we’re in a tough predicament; we just got our new gym floor put in. We had limited summer practices. I’m going with man-to-man defense and a motion offense, but the kids need time to learn it. I’ll have a better idea by league what we have, and I think we could surprise people. But they have to learn the system first. Right now the goal is to play hard and smart.” Which is another way of saying wait until next season. But expect the Colonists to keep giving everyone a battle as they have in the past.
