Whining Aside, There Are Positive Signs in Fullerton

Share

Things are looking up in Fullerton. The utility tax is coming to an end. But Fullerton may have a sore winner! At the Nov. 15 City Council meeting, the atmosphere was charged with undeserved, hot language aimed by a council member at a fellow council member. Can we ask why? Language that is most often spoken by overzealous citizens angry at the action about to be taken by the council was broadcast, on more than one occasion, by the whining winner from the council platform.

The vote was 4 to 1 for repeal of the utility tax. The attacked council member’s vote changed nothing, it only added to the majority side. But it was marvelous to hear each council member state his or her ideas and vote their consciences. So often before the election, there was a voting bloc that discouraged many who wanted to add their views.

Let’s hope we see more of the same independence when issues arise at council meetings. Ninety-nine and forty-four one-hundredths percent of the people on both sides of the utility tax issue want a better Fullerton with more businesses and a quality environment.

It is now time to work together by the civil airing of ideas in the public forum where they are judged solely on their merits. Let’s hope the civility from the council platform as well as the citizens in attendance rules the day.
